Unpacking Tips After Moving Out Of State

Reorganizing your Home After Moving Out of State

Long-distance moves can feel more complicated because of their length, and the effort you put in to planning and executing your move. When moving out of state, you might feel exhausted upon arrival in your new home, making it hard to focus on setting up your new space, especially if you’re preparing to go to a new job or school.

The best unpacking tip is to use the services available to you through Priority to make your move easier and simpler. Priority offers comprehensive packing, moving, and storage services that can be customized to fit your budget and your timeline. Our packing and unpacking services can help you be sure that each item in your home is packed safely, transported securely, and unpacked into the right room in your new home. We use an organizing and labeling system while packing that helps our unpackers know exactly what to do—meaning you can focus on the other tasks of adjusting to life in your new community.

If you’re a DIY packer and unpacker, our expert teams have put together some tips to help you unpack and organize your house after moving out of state.

  1. Focus on one space at a time. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed with thoughts like, “my whole house is in boxes!” or “I can’t find anything!” When you focus on one room, you can reassure yourself by knowing where everything is in your kitchen, for starters. We recommend starting with the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom to make the most of your first few hours spent unpacking.
  2. Start with the two Fs: floorplan, and furniture. If you’re moving out of state, chances are you’re moving to a home that has a completely different floorplan than the home you’re leaving. Spend some time thinking about how to structure your new home: what activities need to occur in each space? What pieces of furniture make that happen? For instance, if you’re turning a den into a spare bedroom, you’re more likely to put a bed set in that room, and put your desk into a different room. Having a plan for your floorplan and furniture can help you make other decisions as you go.
  3. Get rid of cardboard. Even if you can’t find the right place for each item as you unpack, empty and break down boxes as best you can and remove them from your living space. You can stack them in your garage, basement, or storage space, but getting cardboard out of the rooms of your home will have an immediate impact on helping you feel like you actually live there.
  4. Set goals, and maintain momentum. You might decide that you want to unpack five boxes in each room per day, or you might decide you want to completely finish unpacking your kitchen over the course of a day. No matter how you decide to allocate your energy, naming a particular goal and then sticking to it will make sure you get your home organized in no time.

Priority is here to help you with all your packing, moving, and storage needs. For more information on our residential services, contact us today by phone or email.
