How to Prepare Before the Arrival of Professional Movers

April 21, 2017Priority MovingMoving TipsNo Comments

Professional movers come to your home to do an assessment, provide an accurate estimate, carefully pack and label all of your belongings using a strategic system, move your packed items, and then unpack them at your new home. However, that does not mean that you are without responsibility. For a seamless move, there are some things that you need to do prior to the movers showing up.

  • Purge – Weeks, even months, before your scheduled move, take the opportunity to go through your possessions to determine what can be tossed out and recycled. By purging, the volume of items that you need to have packed and transported will be less, which equates to a nice cost savings and less time finalizing the move.
  • Separate Non-Movable Items – Although professional movers take almost anything, there are some limitations. Moving companies will not transport hazardous materials, perishables, and live plants. If you have any of these and you want to keep them, you will have to move them in your personal vehicle. Once you hire the moving company, you can request a list of their restricted items.
  • Take Inventory – Instead of tossing things randomly into boxes, an expert packer does everything in an orderly fashion. However, before things are packed, you need to make an inventory list of items being moved. Even though professional movers have solid reputations and are trustworthy, items can come up missing. By having a list, you can check your belongings that made it to the new house to what left the old house. This will help you determine if anything is missing so that you can file a claim.
  • Appliance Preparation – If the professional movers that you hired do not prepare appliances, you will need to. Start by removing all of the contents and then cleaning and drying the appliances. Next, unplug the appliances, using rubber bands to keep the cords securely wrapped. For any appliances with glass, cut two pieces of cardboard 1 inch larger in diameter than the glass. After placing a piece on the front and back, use heavy-duty tape to keep the cardboard in place to prevent breakage during the move.

Essentials Box – You may not need an essentials box for a local move, but one is recommended when moving long-distance. Inside, place important legal documents, medication, extra clothing, snacks, bottled water, disposable plates and eating utensils, toiletries, and books and games. If you have a pet, include
