Packing Your Car Efficiently for Your Move – Advice from Cross Country Movers

January 4, 2019Priority MovingMoving TipsNo Comments

The cross country movers at Priority know that planning for a long distance move is made more challenging by all the logistics you’ll need to think through. For instance, how will you move your car or any other vehicles you own? And how will you and other members of your household travel to your new home? If your answer is that you’ll be driving your vehicle to your new home, a little planning ahead of how best to use the space in your car can make your move easier overall.

First, decide how many people will be in your car. If you’re driving a long distance, consider bringing one or more companions to assist you in driving and navigation. Yourself and any companions will need space for a bag or two for your trip. If you need to transport pets and want to drive them with you, you’ll also need to account for space in your car for the pet’s carrier, food, and any other needs it will have on your journey.

Next, think through the amount of space available to you in the car, and the items in your household that you most want to keep with you instead of letting the cross country movers handle it. You’ll want to consider the size and shape of the items you want to bring in the car versus the space available to you in the car. For instance, if it makes you nervous to pack and part with important records and family documents, those items are easily packed and secured in your car’s trunk. If it’s heirloom furniture or a collection of antique books that make you nervous to part with, it’s a better idea to talk with your cross country movers about packing and moving strategies than to try to pack those items and move them yourself.

Your instinct might be to fill your car to the ceiling with items and take as much as possible with you, but this is challenging for a few reasons. First, it increases the quantity of items you have to pack and move yourself. It also might not be the safest way for some of your household items to make the journey. Also, you should leave space in the car so that you can see your rearview mirror and all windows clearly. Obstructing views in your car makes the move unsafe for your household and for you.
