The truth is there’s nothing easy about changing homes. But while it’s challenging for adults, moving can be especially stressful on kids. Luckily, our Priority packers and movers have come up with the following advice on how to prepare your children for a move. Certainly, it can be sad to say goodbye to a childhood home. But with our helpful tips, your transfer will go as smoothly as possible!
Involve children in the moving process.
When children are kept in the loop every step of the way, it’s a lot less stressful for them. So, keep them up-to-date on the details, including when you need to start packing and the actual relocation date. Mark everything down clearly on a family calendar they have access to. If your kids are older, have them pack up their personal items by themselves. Younger ones can decorate moving boxes to personalize them, using stickers, crayons, markers, and labels.
Familiarize kids with new surroundings.
Before moving out, have your kids take pictures of your home to document their adventure. After moving into the new house, more pictures or videos can be taken to record the transition – and distract them from any unease. Also, print out a large map of the new neighborhood and mark the location of the new house, along with several other places they may like to visit, such as landmarks, parks, and restaurants.
Say goodbye with a party.
Create some lasting memories with a going-away party. Make sure you involve your children when planning the event. Get creative with parting gifts. Stuffed animals, t-shirts, and other crafts can be easily personalized with a special message.
Keep old rituals going – but also start new ones.
If during the hectic unpacking, try to keep old rituals going to lessen anxiety. Keep Taco Tuesdays and Sushi Sundays going, your kids will definitely appreciate it. However, there’s no reason why you can’t start new rituals as well. Movie Mondays, anyone?
Maintain a positive attitude.
Above all else, our packers and movers suggest you maintain a positive attitude throughout the entire process. Even if you’re not happy about the move or are particularly stressed, it’s essential to keep an overall positive demeanor – especially around your children.
