Helpful Office Moving Tips

May 8, 2017Priority MovingMoving TipsNo Comments

While there are some similarities between residential moving and office moving, there are also some distinctive differences. For this reason, it is important that you hire a reputable moving company that specializes in handling business moves. Although the movers will take care of many things, you will still be left with a to-do list. Taking information gathered from some of the top commercial movers, a list of helpful tips is provided below.

  • Good Planning – The most important of all office moving tips is to plan as far in advance as possible. This will give you some leeway if unexpected challenges arise. In addition, you need to have a formal plan in place so that all employees of the company will have clear direction.
  • Designated Lead – One person within your organization should be designated as the lead. This individual will be the go-to person for questions or issues. The designated lead will also be responsible for assigning specific tasks to one or two people in each department while still overseeing the entire moving and packing process.
  • Correct Packing – Another suggestion is to have each person do their own packing, including filing cabinet and desk. However, there needs to be a system in place so that everyone follows the same guidelines. For filing cabinets, employees have the opportunity to get rid of outdated documents. Just make sure they have a clear understanding of what should stay and what can go. You also need to have a shredder on hand for documents that can be trashed. As for desks, each employee should completely empty every drawer, placing small or loose items in zipped plastic bags.
  • IT Equipment – If there is a relatively small number of in-house computers and other IT equipment, designating someone to collect, properly label, and inventory the items can help. On the other hand, if your company has a large number of computers and IT equipment, it would be best to bring in a trained professional to handle everything.
  • Building Assessment – Experts say that for office moving, not only do you need to focus attention on the existing building, you need to take an assessment of the space in the new building. That way, you can formalize a plan as to where each employee will go and how furniture and other larger items will be placed.
  • Artwork – Even if you have someone volunteer to take down all of the artwork, wrap it, and move it, this is something best left to a professional. Reputable moving companies have expertise in handling artwork, thereby ensuring that it arrives at the new office unscathed.
