OVERVIEW
Mission Valley is a wide-valley neighborhood that runs east-to-west in San Diego, California and is bordered by Interstate 5 to the west and Interstate 15 to the east. The Mission Valley neighborhood is further divided into two neighborhoods: East Mission Valley and West Mission Valley. The State Route 163 divides Mission Valley East and Mission Valley West.
ATTRACTIONS
Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá: Founded in 1769 as the first Franciscan Mission in ‘The Californias’, The Mission is a National Historic Landmark which is located at the eastern end of Mission Valley. Rich in history, the present-day church is the fourth to stand in this location. The Mission is an active parish presently and serves the Diocese of San Diego and is partially funded by a gift shop and ground tours available to the public for a small donation.
Qualcomm Stadium: A multi-purpose stadium, Qualcomm Stadium is best known as the home of the San Diego Chargers and the San Diego State University (SDSU) Aztecs football teams. Located in Mission Valley East near the I-8/I-15 interchange, Qualcomm Stadium, known for years as Jack Murphy Stadium, was named by San Diego-headquartered telecommunications company Qualcomm in 1997. Qualcomm Stadium is also the host to many international soccer matches, College Holiday Bowl and Poinsettia Bowl as well as the only stadium to host the Super Bowl and the World Series in the same year. The stadium is easily accessible via the Qualcomm Stadium San Diego Trolley Station’s Green Line running from Downtown San Diego to the west and Santee to the east. At time of writing this overview, the Qualcomm Stadium is still home to the San Diego Chargers and San Diego residents await the outcome of the initiative to move the Charger’s to a proposed new stadium located in the East Village neighborhood of San Diego, California.
Shopping: there are two major shopping malls located in the Mission Valley San Diego including: Fashion Valley Mall and Westfield Mission Valley which both boast movie theatres. Fashion Valley Mall is the home to high end stores such as: Jimmy Choo, Hermes, Louis Vuitton and Kate Spade. Westfield Mission Valley is the home to more mainstream stores and big box retailers such as Target, Macys and Bed Bath & Beyond. The Mission Valley neighborhood is additionally home to numerous small strip-malls, IKEA, Best Buy and more.
