If your family is getting ready to make an interstate or long distance move, then you already have plenty of items on your to-do list. Aside from all the home repairs, organizing, packing, and purging you might want to do, you’ll also need a game plan for your move itself. Long distance moving doesn’t have to be hard on your family, and keeping your kids engaged and entertained will help make the move easier on everyone.
If you’re driving:
Many families choose to take the family vehicle to the new home. Sometimes this means a long road trip. Dedicate time ahead of your move day to get your car packed with every essential—and when you’re traveling with kids, this means toys, games, snacks, and more. Consider purchasing neck pillows for use in the backseat, or letting kids bring their favorite blanket. A portable DVD player can also go a long way toward helping keep kids entertained in the backseat for long hours.
If you’re flying:
It’s a great idea to let kids pick out their favorite toys or games to travel with, but if you’re flying, you’ll have to be more diligent about what they can bring. Bear in mind that there are restrictions for some types of batteries, and of course any toy that looks like a firearm or mimics a firearm should not be brought with you through security. You should also talk with your kids about what the security screening process will be like, and what they can expect from their encounter with TSA.
If you have older kids:
Older kids might seem easier to entertain during long hours of transit, because you may be able to let them entertain themselves with phones, tablets, or DVD players for much of the time. Be prepared to meet their mobile charging needs (you can buy portable power banks at any electronics stores, and even home goods stores tend to stock cheaper or smaller-capacity portable chargers).
Long distance moving can be made easier by having a great game plan for the day of your actual move. The more preparation you can get done in advance, the easier your move day will be on your whole family.
