Moving long distances can seem like it also creates distance between your social life. If everyone you know is living hundreds of miles away, you might feel a tiny bit stuck as far as your social interactions go. After all, saying hello to cashiers probably shouldn’t make up the bulk of your interactions with other humans. If you’re a cross-country mover, here are some tips to meet people in your new city:
Even if you don’t read a single book in the group, finding a book club near you can be a great way to meet new people. Some of them you may hit it off, and others you might not. What matters is the interaction and the fact that you’re getting out there.
Most cities, towns, groups, schools, businesses, etc have a Facebook page you can join just by requesting. Look at the Facebook groups available for your surrounding areas. You might find that you really like the Antique Lovers group set up over your county, or maybe the Cars for Sale in a certain town is lively and interactive. Post that you were a cross-country mover and you’re completely new to the area. Ask for suggestions of places to eat. People love to be welcoming once they know your situation.
You may have just graduated from college, or maybe you’ve been done with school for a while. It’s never a bad idea to see what kinds of classes are offered in your area purely out of interest, no credits attached. Look into yoga, furniture flipping, art, or metalwork. Try new things to meet new people.
If you have a highly social work life, that’s awesome. Or maybe you like to keep to yourself at your desk, smiling kindly at the older man who works not far from you every other morning. Try to be open at work. Stay in the break room longer than usual, or hang out by the vending machine. You never know, your social life might become like The Office.
Dog shelters, pet farms, botanical gardens, libraries, schools, humanitarian aid centers, or the older women and gentlemen of your new community would love a little outreach. If you reach out to them, they often reach right back, and you’ll be meeting people in no time and in a beneficial and kind way.
If you’re single, just try dating apps. That might make you snort, but they’re really a great way to meet people, whether romantic or platonic. Try apps for games you enjoy, arts and classes you like, reading (like Goodreads), and so on. It’s conveniently in your pocket whenever you want to try meeting people that way.
If you’re religious, you might be able to connect with people who have similar values in your nearby church. If you’re nondenominational or you’re not sure you’re comfortable with church social interactions, functions, and activities, you don’t need to worry. There are so many options out there for cross-country movers to meet new people.
If you recently moved cross-country or you’re looking to move cross-country, reach out to reputable movers in the area, such as Priority movers. They’re a great team of hard-working hands who just may be able to point you to the most social cafe in your new city.
