When you are talking to top moving companies about moving quotes, one additional feature they will ask you about is whether you wish to purchase moving insurance. There are many reasons why insuring your household goods may be a good idea. Here at Priority, we are of the firm belief that if the items you plan to ship are worth paying to ship, then they are worth protecting with insurance. As part of our commitment to providing you with the best moving experience, we offer this information.
Limited Coverage Is Required by Law
US DOT Federal Carrier Safety Administration regulations require that the carrier accept responsibility for all items of value no matter whether your move is local or taking you around to the other side of the world. But this is minimal; you may want to consider the options offered in our moving quotes. These include:
Released (or by weight) Value – this is the no-cost coverage mandated by the US DOT Federal Carrier Safety Administration. Currently, under this coverage, moving companies are required to pay you for losses or damages at the rate of $0.60 per pound. Under this requirement, your 25lb $3000.00 4K UHDTV you’ve had for less than a month is worth a whopping $15.00. That’s right a whole fifteen dollars! Suddenly that free insurance doesn’t sound so good, does it?
Full (or actual) Value – you do have to pay for this type of insurance coverage, the coverage you get is worth the cost. With this insurance, should anything be damaged or destroyed, the insurance company has the option to repair the item, replace it with an identical item, or give you the full cash value of the item.
Homeowners Coverage – you may also want to contact the company who provides your homeowner’s insurance. They might be able to offer coverage for your move in excess of that offered by the moving company. You would have to pay a deductible, but if you have expensive items, it might be worth the cost.
