DIY Moving Mistakes and How to Avoid Them – Tips from Local Moving Companies to Make your Next Move Easier

November 30, 2018Priority MovingMoving TipsNo Comments

Local moving companies often hearing from customers who moved themselves previously, and have decided to use professional help this time. The team of experts at Priority knows that there are lots of reasons why people might choose to move themselves, but there are mistakes that can be made when you don’t use professional packing and moving services from local moving companies. Here are some tips from the experts at Priority that can help you avoid any DIY downfalls.

  • Have a packing strategy. Lots of folks make the mistake of packing piecemeal, as they find a box, bin, or bag to use. This results in uneven packing, meaning your items are probably not packed securely with appropriate packing materials, or you may be packing in advance items that you need every day. When you use professional packing services, local moving companies will provide standardized boxes that can be clearly labeled, as well as packing supplies to make sure all of your possessions are safe during transit.
  • Take special care with fragile, delicate, brittle, and breakable items. Especially in the kitchen, you’ll have lots of items that need to be packed individually and with adequate packing materials—otherwise they are sure to break when the box gets moved, stacked, or unpacked. Plates, saucers, and other flat glass, ceramic, or otherwise breakable items should be wrapped individually in packing paper, cloth, or bubble wrap and stacked vertically in a box that has additional padding at the bottom and top.
  • Plan for heavy, unwieldy, and difficult items. Fitness equipment, pianos, shelving units, bed frames, and other large pieces of furniture that don’t come apart require special planning and care. Ask more than one person for assistance in moving these items, and be sure that whatever vehicle you are using can fit the piece before you move it. Always use caution when lifting heavy items.
  • Strategize how to pack your vehicle. Be mindful of the weight, width, and height of furniture as you pack. You want to be sure that if your van, truck, or other vehicle has to make a sudden stop or sharp turn, none of your items will topple over or crush each other.

Consider the above tips carefully if you are planning a DIY move. If in the end you decide to leave your relocation to local moving companies, remember the team at Priority is experienced, focused on your satisfaction, and available to help on your schedule.
