Advice from our California Movers: 5 Tips on How to Help your Pets Adjust to a New Home

We have the following 5 tips on how you can help your pets adjust to their new environment after a move. Thanks to our professional California movers at Priority Moving who have overseen a great many relocations, this advice is sure to help your fur babies slowly transition to their new surroundings.

  1. Keep the Same Schedule

For as long as they’ve lived with you, your pets have more or less had the same schedule. This routine is not only helpful for them to get their regular meals and walks but knowing what’s to come also relieves stress for them. What may not seem like a big deal for us is in fact a huge deal for them. As such, try your best to stick to the usual routine through the packing, moving, and unpacking.

  1. Make Sure They Get Plenty of Exercise

Another way of releasing stress for pets is exercise. But also, if your dog is very active and needs that outlet to get their energy out, then taking away some exercise time may create a ball of energy that needs to release it in other ways – like by destroying your sofa. Try your best not to skip any much-needed playtime or their anxiety levels may increase.

  1. Create Their New Space

After arriving at your new home, one of the first things to do to help your pet adjust to their new home is to create an area for them. Choose a nice, quiet corner and place their bed, toys, bowls, and other favorite objects. They don’t need to stay there permanently. It’ll just be their special spot for the time being until you have a chance to organize your place.

  1. Introduce Your House Bit-by-Bit

Getting to know your whole house all at once may be too confusing and overwhelming for your pet. So, if you can, limit their access to the other rooms until you can take the time to personally introduce your pet to them. Don’t rush it, just let them take their time to adjust.

  1. Take Some Time Off Work

Going back to work the day after a move and leaving your pet alone will ultimately stress them. Ideally, take a week or two off work to stay home with your dog or cat to help them transition during this period. If you need to leave for a short while, take them along or try to find someone who can stay with them.
