In today’s economy, living on your own can be very expensive. Between moving and storage, rent, utilities, groceries, and any other bills, having your own place can burn a huge hole in your wallet. That is why many young people (and older people) are opting to live with roommates. Having a roommate is a good way to split costs and save some money in the long run.
However, if you just moved to a new place and don’t know anyone, finding a roommate can be hard. Luckily, there are plenty of websites and apps you can use to hook you up with suitable roommates. Here are just a few of our favorite sites for finding roommate, as recommended by Priority moving and storage.
1. Facebook
Facebook is the go-to website to find roommates because virtually everyone and their mother has a Facebook account nowadays. If you do not mind making your roommate search public, you can post a status inquiring about potential roommates in the area.
2. Craigslist
Craigslist is not only a great internet board to find good deals on things, but can also be used to find roommates. You can make a listing looking for roommates and respond to inquiries. Craigslist lets anyone make an account, so you need to do your due diligence before meeting anyone from the site.
3. Roomster
Roomster operates in more than 192 countries and in over 18 different languages so you can use it to find roommates wherever you are. You can match with members based on site testimonials and questions answered in your profile. You can even link your social media accounts to get a better match.
4. PadMapper
In addition to being a great site to find places to rent, you can use PadMapper to find potential roommates. If you already have a place, you can make a listing specifying you are looking for roommates.
5. Reddit
Reddit has one of the largest internet communities in the world and is a great place to find like-minded individuals looking for roommates. Most cities have their own individual pages (called subreddits) where you can make posts looking for roommates in the area.
6. Roommates.com
Roommates.com lets you make a profile for free, but you have to pay to get the most out of the app. The extra price is worth it because Rommates.com verifies each profile to prevent scammers.
7. Roomi
Roomi lets users create accounts starting as low as $2.99 a month. The site verifies each user so you can be sure there are no scammers. You can even pay an extra fee to boost your results to the top of roommate searches.
8. BunkUp
Another app available on the Android and iPhone app store, Bunkup is a neat little app that lets you fill out details and matches you with potential roommates. You can post a listing for an existing apartment, or vie for a new apartment with new roommates.
9. SpareRoom
Originally only in the UK, Spareroom now serves in the US. Its entirely free to make an account but you can pay for a premium account that boosts your search rankings and give you ‘early bird’ access to new listings.
